The firm, located on the banks of Lake Como, is arguably the most historic of all Italian manufacturers, was founded in 1921, rose to prominence during the 1950s through grand prix racing, most significantly with its legendary V8 and since the 1970s has been renown for its range of large capacity, transversely-mounted V-twins.

The most famous of these was the 850cc Le Mans superbike, first introduced in 1976 and, in its day, one of the most potent and revered of all road sportsters plus the California, an American-style cruiser first produced in 1971.

Although the firm has struggled since the early 1980s and, in 2004, was taken over by the huge Piaggio concern, machines such as the Stelvio adventure bike, Norge tourer and V7 middleweight roadster retain a strong following.

While today, a revised, modernized version of the California, which is now 1400cc, its new V9 cruisers and the radical MGX-21 ‘bagger’ hint at a brighter future.
