The largest of the Japanese motorcycle manufacturers, Honda has been a major force in off-road sport since the early 1970s when it developed a revolutionary two-stroke motocrosser – the first CR250M
Also called the ‘Elsinore’ for the important U.S. market (after a race in California), the lightweight, two-stroke, single cylinder machine was the world’s first ‘out-of-the-crate’ production motocrosser and was so successful it inspired a whole new type of machine from all the Japanese manufacturers.
The Elsinore was followed by the equally successful CR125M and CR500M with enduro variants also being produced. A later CR250R, in 1997, pioneered aluminium frames while in 2007 Honda’s motocrossers became CRFs with the switch to four-stroke engines.
Over the same period Honda has also been a significant trials bike manufacturer, particularly from the mid-1970s, with machines like the popular four-stroke TL125 and 250. Since 1994, following a tie-up with historic Spanish trails manufacturer Montesa, Honda’s trials bikes, such as the Cota 4RT, have been produced under the Montesa brand.
