The Italian manufacturer is among the most successful of all in motorcycle racing and has built its reputation on high tech performance machines, most recently the Aprilia RSV4 superbike (which has won the world superbike championship three times since 2010) plus its unfaired roadster variant, the Tuono.
Founded in 1945, Aprilia grew quickly in the 1980s and 1990s through a range of lightweight performance two-strokes such as the RS125. Aprilia then expanded into four-stroke middleweight singles such as the Pegaso 650 trail bike and Philippe Starck-designed Moto 6.5. Then in the late 1990s it began producing larger capacity V-twins such as the RSV1000 Mille, SL1000 Falco and ETV1000 Caponord adventure bike.
Unfortunately this rapid growth, combined with Aprilia buying Moto Guzzi in 2000, overstretched the Italian firm’s resources and led to Aprilia’s takeover by Piaggio in 2004. Aprilia lives on today as a world leader in performance motorcycles highlighted by its RSV4.
